The part that takes longest to build by hand is multi-tenancy, and it is the part you cannot retrofit. Every query is scoped to an organisation from the first migration, so a second customer does not mean rewriting the data layer. Stripe webhooks land in your own backend and update your own tables, so subscription state survives Stripe being unreachable.
The data model
- organisations — the billing boundary; every other table hangs off this
- users and memberships — a user can belong to several organisations with a different role in each
- subscriptions and invoices — mirrored from Stripe by webhook so the app never has to ask Stripe what someone is paying
- usage_events — an append-only log, aggregated for the charts rather than recomputed per page load
- audit_log — who changed what, which is the first thing an enterprise buyer asks for
